![]() The people were not living according to God’s will and were headed for destruction. Jesus wept over Jerusalem (Matthew 23:37) because He saw their condition and felt compassion for them. This is significant because it shows us that Jesus was not only concerned for his own life, but also for the welfare of others. He prayed fervently and with great emotion. In this verse, we see that Jesus was a man of prayer. “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission” – Hebrews 5:7 This event teaches us that Jesus cares about our pain and suffering and that he has the power to overcome death. Jesus later raised Lazarus from the dead, proving that he has the power over death. Jesus was deeply moved by their sorrow and wept with them. Here, we see that Jesus wept not only for Lazarus, but also for his sister Mary and the other Jews who had come to mourn Lazarus’ death. But it contains a very important message. John 11:35 “Jesus wept” is the shortest verse in the bible. “When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. This event teaches us that Jesus is deeply moved by the human condition. He knew that the people of Jerusalem would not accept him as their Messiah and that they would suffer greatly because of it. Here, Jesus wept over Jerusalem because he knew the pain and suffering that was coming to the city. We see Jesus weeping during his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. “As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace-but now it is hidden from your eyes” – Luke 19:41-42 And he wept on the cross because he was experiencing the ultimate human pain and suffering.īy understanding the bible’s account of why Jesus wept, we can glean some important lessons about life and death.
